The Creator - Weapons

Back in 2019 we were approached by Gareth Edwards and his Producer Jim Spencer to discuss Gareth’s new project, The Creator. An original sci-fi property doesn’t come around often, and we jumped at the opportunity to provide early blue sky visuals, and eventually the design and manufacture of specialty props and costumes.

From the outset, we knew that Gareth would be shooting across multiple locations in South East Asia with a guerrilla crew, so the production had to be light on their feet. This presented a unique challenge for our team, and required a highly collaborative effort throughout the design and build, particularly when it came to the military weapons and costumes.

A huge array of weapons were required for the various military factions, and a lot of thought had to be put into the look of the guns. To begin with, Gareth and keen to break conventions and no idea was too outlandish. Under Wētā Art Director Jeremy Hanna we explored curving bullets, rotating magazines, bizarre shapes and weird firing systems.

In the end, to reduce the amount of items the crew would be carting around with them, we broke the weapons down in a modular way. We created a base system of guns that could be shared across the military factions, but with break-away panels, graphics and varying barrel shapes that could set them apart from one another.
