Tron: Ares - Suits & Light Cycle

'Tron: Ares' (directed by Joachim Rønning) follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares (Jared Leto), who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission.

Our Design Studio was engaged as part of an early costume design phase for Ares and Athena that would help inform the designs later developed by Christine Clark and her concept team. For a film that would take the Tron universe to the next level, it was important to the filmmakers that the suits offered a homage to their predecessors, such as the distinct strips of light from 2010’s 'Tron: Legacy' and the diffuse lighting seen in 1982’s 'Tron'. We investigated how the costumes could combine both, playing with form and light bars to create something military and armoured.

Our designers explored how internal diffuse lighting could emanate from under Ares' skin. While these ideas were not used in the final film, they offer an interesting insight into the level of detail and thought the filmmakers undertook in the development process. We also got to help conceptualize how the iconic light trail would look and behave in the real world. Transitioning into a solid material, would it ripple with heat distortion or perhaps crack like obsidian on impact?
