War of the Rohirrim - Haradrim & Mûmakil

In 2021, director Kenji Kamiyama invited us on a new yet familiar journey: bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life in 'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim'.

Wulf has reinforced his forces with mercenaries and corsairs from the south. The war-like Haradrim wear scarlet robes, woven leathers, and golden ornaments, layered with metals, stones, and fur to endure the colder northern climate. They’ve tamed a smaller, more armored subspecies of Mûmakil, outfitted with multi-layered war rigs to carry archers and spearmen in their siege of Rohan’s walls.

In the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the towering, tusked Mûmakil are unstoppable beasts. For Kamiyama’s anime film, our design team imagined a more compact but still formidable version - daunting yet realistically vulnerable - reflecting how a subspecies might have evolved in Middle-earth.
