In 2021, director Kenji Kamiyama invited us on a new yet familiar journey: bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life in 'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim'.
.
Outside Edoras, Wulf, a Dunlending lord, seeks vengeance for his father’s death and the long history of conflict between his people and the Rohirrim. The Dunlendings, a rugged hill folk from the slopes of the Misty Mountains, had once dwelled in the lands of Rohan before being driven out by the horse-lords. For Kamiyama’s anime film, our design studio helped reimagine these ancient rivals of the Rohirrim, drawing on Tolkien’s rich legendarium.
.
At one point in the story, Wulf establishes his encampment at Isengard, the ancient stronghold at the southern end of the Misty Mountains. Our artist Adam Middleton helped visualize Isengard in this earlier era - before Saruman’s corruption - as a formidable but still unspoiled fortress, serving as Wulf’s base of operations in his campaign against Rohan.
