Building upon the work we did with Costume Designer Deborah L. Scott for 'Avatar: The Way Of Water', we were excited to dive back into exploring the reef-based Metkayina Clan for 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. Working closely with Wētā Workshop's skilled textiles department, we continued to develop the design style of garments for individual clan members, and experimented further with the use of local (to the Metkayina) materials such as shells, corals, seaweed and the like.

Given that the Sully family by this stage are considered a part of the Metkayina clan, we also see the introduction of these materials into their costumes. Even the ever pragmatic Jake has swapped his traditional Omatikaya cummerbund for the to'a guard of the Metkayina, with iridescent paua shell plating on his chest. Of course Neytiri, still feeling displaced living among the reef people, obstinately refuses to take on any influences from them, preferring instead to remain true to the traditions of her people.
