In 2019 Weta Workshop began work on Amazon’s The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power. For many in the Workshop, this was a welcome return to Middle-earth and it was a pleasure to design and manufacture the prosthetics in the show under the guidance of Prosthetics Supervisor Jamie Wilson and Prosthetics Designer Jason Docherty.
It was exciting for us to be able to revisit the Orcs, and breathe new life into a race that was already so iconic in the world of Middle Earth. Our team of designers and sculptors explored the Rings of Power Orcs as a force that are just beginning to re-group after being scattered and close to being wiped out altogether. Pale from hiding underground, they are becoming emboldened as they encroach upon their enemy's territory once again.
These images are digital paint-overs done by our concept designers over the make-up sculpts created by our sculpting team. These were based on a range of 2-D designs and sculpted maquettes our artists produced earlier in the process as we explored the look of the Orcs for this show.
