Renfield - Renfield

Back in 2021 we were approached by Chris McKay and his team to do some early design exploration for Renfield played by Nicholas Hoult and Dracula played by Nicolas Cage. The following artworks showcase 3 main looks for the character Renfield as he progresses throughout the film.

Old World Look - Our initial designs for the character of Renfield explore him as a man out of time. McKay wanted all his clothes to be of the ‘Old World’ so he would stand out in the film's contemporary setting.

Old Navy Look - In the second half of the film, Renfield goes through a makeover and reinvents himself as he looks to cut ties with Dracula. The idea that Renfield might recruit his own little ‘familiars’ was explored in the form of small animals like cats and rats.

Battle Mode Look - This look was particularly fun to explore. McKay pitched this as a classic montage where the hero is arming themselves for battle, however because Renfield gets all his strength from eating insects, he arms himself with various bug filled containers and accoutrements instead.
