In 'Death Of A Unicorn', the A24 horror-comedy directed by Alex Scharfman, father-daughter duo Elliot and Riley accidentally hit a unicorn whilst enroute to a wilderness retreat.
.
During the film's pitch stage, our Design Studio was approached by the production company The Secret Engine, in collaboration with A24, for early creature development of a stallion, mare and foal. Unlike the white, horned horses often woven into cultural imagination, these steeds needed to be formidable predators. We worked closely with Scharfman to explore different anatomical structures, and chose to veer away from equine physiology to give the creature massive shoulders that sloped to low hind quarters, feet like an elephant, sharp canines, and even claws.
