Drawing heavily from the neon-lit tropes of 1980's industry and fashion, the props, weapons and technical apparatus of Ghost in the Shell were designed with a lean towards retro-futurism. Masamune Shirow's illustrations and conceptual thought were also a constant point of reference throughout the design process and helped the artists to hone a distinctive, fresh aesthetic whilst maintaining elements of the original property.
