In 2019 Wētā Workshop began work on Amazon’s The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power. For many in the Workshop, this was a welcome return to Middle-earth and it was a pleasure to design and manufacture the weapons for each race in the show under the guidance of Production Designer Ramsey Avery and Weapons Master Joe Dunckley.
The Dwarven weapons in the show draw inspiration from the architecture of Khazad-Dûm. Strong geometric shapes became the foundation for Dwarven visual and material culture, from which we added further embellishments. Similar to how we see runes carved into the architecture, the dwarves adorn their weapons and tools with ancient sayings, phrases and symbology. This serves as a reminder of their history, ancestors and environment.
